Fogo Volcano, Cape Verde

14.95 N, 24.35 W, 2829 m

November 2014 eruption

Seismic activity was reported to begin at Fogo on the evening of November 22, 2014 and the eruption began on the morning of November 23, 2014. The activity began at the Pico cone, which developed near the volcano summit during the previous eruption at Fogo during 1995, and then extended to multiple vents around Fogo volcano. The eruption produced explosions, lava fountaining, ash and gas emissions. Lava flows from the eruption have extended over 4 km and both ash and gas emissions have been detected traveling away from the vent.

Weak SO2 emissions from Fogo were first observed by OMPS on November 23, 2014 during an overpass at 14:57 UT. No SO2 emissions were observed during the OMI overpass roughly an hour earlier though the row anomaly (RA) covered much of Cape Verde during the November 23rd overpass. OMI and OMPS recorded similar amounts of SO2 on November 24th and roughly similar amounts on November 26th, the only two days of observation that the RA did not artificially lower the OMI SO2 estimate. The amount of degassing recorded by both OMI and OMPS is recorded in the table below for the first week of eruptive activity.
